Our barrhill soils are incredibly fertile and very well suited to growing cereals and seeds, hence a large part of Royalburn’s operation continues to be arable. We grow approximately seven hundred tonnes of various seeds and cereals such as sunflowers, wheat, barley, peas and other crops annually. We manage our cropping land mindfully, rotating between cereals, legumes and sunflowers which all play an important role in protecting and enhancing the health and ecology of our soil. Legumes such as peas fix nitrogen in the soil, whilst sunflowers with their deep taproots, aerate the soil and increase water infiltration.
Our crops are pesticide and fungicide free, and we are continually trialling new methods and technologies to reduce the need for tillage, through direct drilling alongside cover cropping and crimp rolling to reduce our impact on the environment.
